Greece Golf 2018 - Costa Navarino

Greece, Costa Navarino - June 2018

We had the privilege to visit the westcoast of the Athens mainland and drove 3 1/2 hours from Athens Airport to Costa Navarino Westin Beach and Golf Resort. Costa Navarino is located in Messinia in the southwest Peloponnese, in one of the most unspoiled and breathtaking landscapes in the Mediterranean. The Westin Resort current has two golf course - we played them both! Both with their individual beauty and style.

The Dunes course is located on the property of the hotel. It was in immaculate condition, probably because it just hosted the Aegean Airlines Open a few weeks ago. The buggies were almost perfect with ball and club washers, as well as shoe cleaners and a cooler filled with water bottles. The only thing missing was a Tee dispenser! The GPS was very helpful – but was in meters, so we had to remember to shave off about 10% for our yardage. The front 9 we played just us. At the 10th, we were joined by a very nice fellow, Heinz, who was visiting from Germany with his wife (not a golfer). The course is smothered in flowers, shrubs including Oregano and Sage, Olive Trees and some view of the Sea. So much beauty it was hard to pay attention to golfing. It’s a relatively short course – even from the back Tees (just over 6,000 yards) but still challenging with tons of bunkers. The Greens were large and had a lot of undulation adding some strokes to our score. While we did take a Buggy, it’s definitely a walking course with the holes not too far from each other. It was an amazing round – both the course and our scores.. Liz almost broke 100 (102.. so close!) – with no warm up and rented clubs too…the clubs were excellent and now Jeff has his eye on a new Driver.

The Bay Course which is about 15 minutes down the road outside of the hotel complex. The Bay Course is under construction and will be adding a Clubhouse, and another hotel. Then also 2 additional golf courses are planned for the surrounding area. The course was beautiful in a different way and had the Bay in sight at almost all the holes. The construction was a bit noisy but it was fine. We were behind a 4-ball so we had a wait at each hole, but it was a beautiful day so we found our patience and enjoyed our surroundings. The Bay Course was filled with twists and turns and hills and dips. There were 3 Par 3 holes on each 9 – which Liz loved! We actually found this course a bit harder than The Dunes. We enjoyed another great round and can now check Greece off golfing the world! The staff was friendly and we learned a bit about Olive harvesting that is done in the Oct/November times – just toward the end of the season. And there are two types of Olive Trees – the ones with small olives are for Olive Oil, the larger olives remain the Olives we get to enjoy.

Thank you to the hospitality of the Costa Navarino staff - it's a spectacular location and we highly recommend a visit for anyone that loves to relax, pool, spa, beach, golf and participate in fitness and cultural activities!

Illinois Mulligan - Cog Hill, Dubsdread No 4 - May 2018

Finally made it to Cog Hill Golf Club, Illinois Mulligan - April 2018

After a fantastic trip to Detroit MI to visit The Henry Ford Museum we drove 4 hours to the Chicago area to finally hit the Cog - specifically No 4 - Dubsdread (a Dubber is not a very good golfer, shorted to Dubs, it was said that they would dread playing this course because it was difficult - not to mention its "hundreds" of bunkers).

Known as the "Patriarch of Public Golf," Joe Jemsek always aspired to provide a country club experience and amenities to all golfers. Joe started as a Caddy, became a Golf Professional but decided he would rather be a Golf Course owner.

No 4 has it's own Pro Shop, but be sure to go into the main clubhouse and get to the pub in the lower level to see historic pictures and memories - Cog Hill opened in 1927 with Course No 1. Cog Hill No 4 (Dubsdread) hosted the Western Open on the PGA Tour, where Tiger Woods won several times. Cog Hill Golf Course is No. 1 on the list of Best Courses You Can Play in Illinois by Golfweek and Top 100 in the U.S. by Golf Magazine, and America's 100 Greatest Public Courses by Golf Digest.

We had a wonderful round. The Course is in fantastic shape. It was early in the season (April) and with Spring's delay, most of the trees were not bloomed so it will be that much more beautiful in season. Many doglegged holes, gave a lot of character to the course - it was not boring! And if you can't avoid the "hundreds" of bunkers, you'll at least get your share of practice hitting out of sand!

Our Starter Dave was very friendly, enjoying his "retirement" on the golf course. We played the back nine with Mike and Joe - two locals who where a lot of fun and helped to make the round even more enjoyable.

Cog Hill is located in Oak Book, IL

An Ireland Mulligan - July 2016

An Ireland Mulligan - July/Aug 2016

A year ago July-Aug (2015) our trip to Ireland was so amazing, we immediately knew that we would go back - we didn't think it would be this quickly though! July-Aug 2016 - this time we flew into Shannon Airport and spend a week driving over 800 Kilometers around the spectacular west coast of Ireland. Another visit to the Cliffs of Moher, plus a tour of the Ring of Kerry and the Skellig Ring (yes - the location used in the recent Star Wars movie) and then 5 rounds of Golf…phew!

First we stayed in Doolin at a lovely B&B called Ballyvoe House owned and run buy a terrific lady named Helen with a spectacular view of the Cliffs of Moher. We then moved to Killarney and stayed at the Ashville House run by a nice gent named Declan that was in a great location and recently renovated. Our last stop was to Ballybunion where we stayed at The Tides B&B hosted by David and Doreen Walsh. A beautful home with spacious rooms, and in a nice quiet location, just close enough to town and the golf course. Thanks to all the Innkeepers for their wonderful hospitality!

Spanish Point

Spanish Point Golf Club - Spanish Point Ireland – County Clare

Recommended by our dear friends the Keatings (Jim & Lucille), Spanish Point Golf Club is a 9 hole course you play twice – some holes have a 2nd Tee so the hole feels different – for a full 18 hole round. For 25 Euros, it’s a terrific value! Even though it’s 9 holes – it’s definitely not an “executive” course. There are some challenging holes, especially the Par 5 Hole 3 – uphill all the way, with blind Tee-shot, and do not be short on your approach to the green or a deep valley awaits you. The #1 handicap Par 4 Hole 5, also with blind Tee-shot, is tremendously challenging. Ending with two picturesque Par 3 holes, Spanish Point is a clever and unique course and worth a visit if your travels allow.

Thank you to Noel, the current Club President, for his warm Irish welcome.

Ireland 2016 - Old Head Golf Course

Old Head Golf Links - Kinsale, Ireland – County Cork

Famous for it’s location on a peninsula, Old Head juts out into the Atlantic Ocean, rising hundreds of feet above the water with towering sea cliffs on which this unbelievable golf course was built. With the ocean crashing all around you, nature is the biggest challenge. Nine holes play along the cliff tops and all 18 holes provide stunning ocean views.

The day we played (Mon Aug 1, 2016) was one of the worst weather days Ireland has seen in sometime – sustained rains and heavy winds made for a challenging round (by the way - we learned the difference between showers and rain. Rain is what we had – sustained rain. If it was “showers” – it meant the “rain” would quickly come and go).

If you have not played before, we recommend a caddy. Our caddy, Shane was a trooper! We played with Chris and Doug (Father/Son) from NJ/NY and their caddy – Shane. They were terrific company on this rainy round. Rain did not stop our “fun” and photo opportunities – we were “lucky” that the fog did not roll in until later!

You may think because the course is on a “small” peninsula the holes may be narrow, but there was more room to land the fairway than expected. However, some of the greens (particularly 4 and 12) were tucked very tightly between the ocean and the cliffs, so target golf was required. The course is green, lush and breathtaking at every turn. Some highlights along the course are the Lighthouse that for hundreds of years had to manually be wound every 40 minutes until it was automated. And the Lusitania lays 276 feet below the waters – 11 miles southwest (sunk by Germany May 7, 1915 brining the US into WWI).

The overall experience and accommodations are luxurious with wonderful service, the restaurant and food were delicious, as we started off our round with Tea and breakfast and ended with some warm soup and some “chips”. Anthony from golf services was kind enough to dry all our “rainproof” gear that clearly only has a certainly range of rainproof! We only visited for the day and the round of golf, but there are overnight rooms and a spa – so if you have the time and budget, it would be a very relaxing atmosphere for a nice getaway.

Tralee Golf Links - Barrow, Ireland - County Kerry

Tralee Golf Links - Barrow, Ireland - County Kerry

Out of our six rounds of golf, Tralee (Trá Lí = Strand of the River) was our favorite! Partly because it was a dry day – yeah! But not just that – Tralee is a magnificent golf course – and quoting the scorecard “Created by God, Designed by Arnold Palmer”. This was the first European golf course Arnold Palmer planned.

There is a modest golf shop led by John, a very nice, soft-spoken gent who was very welcoming. The restaurant was not open until 10am, so no pre-golf breakfast this time. Check-in is at a small desk in the lobby, rather than in the Golf Shop – which is what we are used too.

Similar to Old Head, Tralee is surrounded by water and pretty much every hole has the ocean in sight and the holes are on the edge of the cliffs –magnificent! And then there was Gerry, our very experienced caddie. His joyful attitude was infectious and his knowledge of the course and the land was fantastic. Thank you Gerry for helping to make our round a delight!

Oh – and I guess this was also one of our favorite rounds because Jeff was 2 inches from his first hole-in-one on the Par 3 Hole 7 and then on the Par 3 Hole 13 Jeff was less than 2 feet from a hole-in-one – oh so close!!! Speaking of Par 3s… they were all in reasonable length from the forward Tees giving Liz has plenty of chances for her first hole-in-one, but alas – Liz is still waiting too. Although, beware of the Par 3 Hole 16, called Shipwreck, as the Tee-shot carry is over a 100 foot chasm.

The most challenging hole was the Par 5 Hole 11, called Palmer’s Peak, which was uphill all the way with a blind shot to the green. This is the highest part of the course with, again, a panoramic view of rock pinnacles, pounding surf and stretches of beach to tempt the photo hunter.

We were told that the land is as it was, less the cut down hills to add the Tee Boxes, Fairway, Greens and Bunkers. The course highlights include a grand beach, rock-lined ocean sites and a lookout “castle” dating back 800 years (be sure to take a moment to climb inside!). There are also several little “hills” to climb while the others are hitting off the Tee-box to soak in the views – don’t miss the photo ops!

Beautiful mountain ranges in the distance surround Tralee and act like a magnet for the rain, keeping the Tralee Golf course thankfully dryer than most! Stephen Goodwin of the Washington Post called Tralee a “Gaelic Pebble Beach”.

Dooks Golf Links, Glen Beigh – County Kerry

Dooks Golf Links, Glen Beigh – County Kerry

Dooks, a quaint, more local course, is a very sweet setting and a less touristy site – so if you want to enjoy another beautiful setting surrounded by water – consider Dooks as an option. The biggest difference in scenery was the closer proximity of the marvelous mountain ranges. Dooks Golf Club, situated in a panoramic setting in a corner of Dingle Bay, which is on the Wild Atlantic Way, was founded in 1889 and is one of the ten oldest Golf Clubs in Ireland.

Another modest pro shop and more friendly people, the course is shorter than average measuring less then 6600 yards from the back tees. Because this was our 2nd round of the day, we opted for 2 junior caddies – Conner and Daniel. Even if this is your first round at Dooks, you probably do not need a caddy, but we were happy to have the company and direction!

It was a quiet afternoon at Dooks so we headed to the first Tee with our caddies and was joined by the amazing Noreen, a 70-something Irish young lady who played a terrific game of golf – outdriving Liz! Conner (17) and Daniel (14 – who started golfing when he was 2) were wonderful guides with Daniel being the putting expert.

We had an enjoyable round thanks to the beautiful location and friendly company!

Ballybunion Golf Course, The Old Course – Ballybunion, Ireland, County Kerry

Ballybunion Golf Course, The Old Course – Ballybunion, Ireland, County Kerry

Of all the rounds of golf we have played during our travels around the world, the day we played the Old Course at Ballybunion was by far the worst weather experience. If not for the fact that it was our only chance to play the course – no one in his or her right mind would have played golf this day. With sustained winds of 25 mph and gusting to over 50 mph, add in intermittent rain showers – it made a challenging golf round that much more “fun”! Yet, foursome after foursome followed like “Lemmings over a cliff”.

Ballybunion is considered one of the finest links courses in the world, however, its remote locale on the Irish southwest coast has prevented the course from being selected for many top championship events. Ballybunion was ranked by Golf Digest in 2005 as the seventh best course in the world outside the United States and continues to be among the top 100 courses in the world.

We played with another daring couple, Michael and Julie from Toledo, OH – and our Caddie, yet another Shane! It was Julie’s 50th birthday that brought them to Ireland (her family heritage) but it was Michael’s love of golf that brought them to Ballybunion.

Because we were battling the weather for the entire round, it was difficult to focus on the beauty of the course itself, as much as we would have liked – but are thankful for the chance to have walked the course and experienced it’s majesty.

The first six holes played alongside Sandhill Road where many homes were visible – giving it a bit of a different feel from the previous coastal courses we played. On the first hole we play right past a small ancient cemetery which is very much in play (yes Liz landed in the middle of it – in which her ball still lays) with an abundance of Celtic crosses, so keep your drive left!

One of the most unique designs of this course is that your tee-shot for Hole 4 goes right over the green of Hole 3, and this similar feature happens again between Holes 5 and 4. It is a very odd visual seeing a flag directly in front of a tee-box!

After hole 6 the rest of the round is along the coast (lucky us, extra wind!) The course is tight and the natural grasses that make up the “rough” on these Links courses are high and thick – and are to be avoided – so hit em straight!

This is not a very forward friendly course and Liz had no chance for a hole-in-one or a birdie on most of the Par 3s as they were very long and mostly all carry.

Even in the greatest conditions, the last 3 holes will be challenging, as they are all narrow, uphill and dogleg lefts, with Hole 17 called Devils Elbow – if that does not tell it all!

Thanks again to our Caddy Shane, we appreciated his professionalism, friendliness, eagle-vision at finding “lost” balls and knowledge of the course – Shane, long with Michael and Julie helped to make the round enjoyable in spite of the weather.

AL_Opelika/Auburn Grand National RTJ Trail _ May 2016

Grand National, Robert Trent Jones Trail, Opelika/Auburn, AL

Congratulations to our friend Jay for graduating from Auburn University's EMBA and giving us a terrific reason to get back to AL and the chance to visit with our good friends Tracie and Bruce Smith and golf one more "Marriott" golf course! While the Grand National RTJT (Robert Trent Jones Trail) is not owned or run by Marriott, it is on the same property as the Auburn Marriott Opelika Hotel and Conference Center so we considered it one in our Marriott Golf Course quest.

There are two courses on the complex, the Lakes and the Links. We played the Lakes Course - which by the way is hosting the Barbasol Championship (http://barbasolchampionship.com/schedule/) week of July 11th, 2016.

The Lakes course is situated on a stunning and relaxing park-like setting surrounded by nothing but green and water! Many of the approaches to the greens had water "in the way" at one angle or another and the topper was the Par 3 island green on the back 9!

And speaking of the greens, not one of them was flat! They were a challenging combination of undulation, creativity - and fun (if you didn't mind 3-4 putts if you didn't get close enough).

While we love walking courses when we can, this is not the best walking course (not sure if they allow) as there is quite the long bridge to cross from front and back 9. The course was forward friendly, the carts were nice and quiet - but did not have GPS, and while distance markers were ok - we recommend at least one person have some sort of GPS device...thanks Bruce for the use of yours!

Make sure to take time before or after to enjoy a beverage on the deck looking onto the course - it was very inviting and relaxing.

Marco Island - Hammock Bay

Hammock Bay Golf Course, Marco Island Marriott – Dec 2015

Recently acquired by the Marco Island Marriott, the Hammock Bay Golf Course joins the Rookery Golf Course. Thanks to Liz’s team meeting’s spectacular location – we were able to golf another Marriott Golf resort this year!

Located about 10 minutes from the hotel, Hammock Bay Golf course is an equally spectacular addition to the hotel. The course recently went through a major renovation and you can certainly tell - spectacular!

The first few hole’s shrubbery that lined the fairway were rain-forest-esc and much of the course had a non-Floridian feel. Definitely a change of pace from the Rookery, while there is water on both, the water is less in play on Hammock and if not all, most of the approaches were trouble free!

The greens were perfect. They were fast, smooth, dry and the ball had true roll. But watch out for the alligators that apparently enjoy sun-bathing on the edges of the greens.

The course was very forward friendly which helped Liz’s round of 100…so close to double-digits!

Congratulations on a beautifully designed and manicured course - it's a round not to miss if you are in the area. And a great reason to visit Marco Island.

Shout out to Bob Pfeiffer and Doug Corbett of the Marco Island Marriott and the entire staff – thank you for your hospitality!

Ireland/Scotland Golf - July 2015

Golfing and Travel in Ireland and Scotland - July 2015

When traveling from the east coast it’s about 6 hours to Ireland, 7 to Scotland. If you leave in the evening you can reset your schedule/internal clock pretty quick by doing the following: Have a light dinner either just before or early on the plane. Watch something “light” or read and then get 4-5 hours of sleep. Have your morning routine handy (toothbrush, hairbrush, deodorant, facewash) and have a little breakfast, then “freshen up”. If possible get an early check-in at your hotel, drop your bags and get settled into your room. Then hit the road and have a plan to spend the late morning and afternoon exploring your local location. Keep yourself busy with exciting and interesting attractions to keep yourself going. Have a light dinner and go to sleep early and sleep for 8-10 hours. You will sleep well! And viola - by the morning you will be set to make the most of your time in Europe and ready for golf!

Some golf terms to know: Golf Carts are called Buggies, and Golf Pull-Carts are called Trollies. There is an expectation to walk on most courses – which was fine by us!

Last point regarding Ireland travel. There are some terrific west-coast golf courses that we did not get a chance to play like Lahinch, Ballybunion, Tralee and Old Head. Soooo we are already planning a "mulligan" trip - but this time flying into Shannon and enjoying west coast golf. If you are planning an Ireland trip we recommend flying into Dublin and out of Shannon and giving yourself about 10 days to enjoy the entire country! Besides golf there is much to see including the Cliffs of Morher and the Ring of Kerry, and many a castle including Blarney.

St. Andrews, Scotland - July 2015

St. Andrews, the Old Course and the Eden Course, July 2015

‘The Home of Golf, It All Started Here”... It was a thrill to finally visit St. Andrews and learn and see the history of the game and oh so many golfers from all around the world. There are actually seven golf courses, but the original course (where it all started) is called the Old Course and the one that everyone wants to play making it very hard to get a tee-time. This course’s history starts back to the 1400s. The course started with 22 holes, but in 1764 a few holes were merged to reduce the total number of holes to 18 and became the world’s standard. 1865 Tom Morris is appointed custodian of the links and remains for 40 years. The land is actually a public park and there is a pathway straight across the 1st and 18th holes, so the golfers and “pedestrians” have to negotiate “passage”…it’s quite the sight! Learn much more about it here: http://www.standrews.com/Timelines/Timeline

They do offer Old Course Tours for 10(pounds) and it’s worth it to enjoy the historical tales that the tour guides share. You will walk along hole 1 and 18 and you’ll jump on to the Swilcan Bridge (one of golf’s most famous landmarks) for your photo op, you’ll also get a “free” golf ball at the St. Andrew’s Golf Shop. Our guide’s great Scottish accent made all his stories totally believable – even the “fact” that it was Goats that were used to chew down the greens, Cows took care of the Fairways because they chewed less so it was higher, and everything else (not eaten) was the “Rough”. And that Golf tournaments started as a form of gambling –which I suppose it still is today for “skins” players.

If you want to play the Old Course you can try a year in advance, work with a Golf-Tour Company … or there is an online ballot process that you can enter 2 days prior to the day you want to play. We tried the ballot three times and did not make it. As an alternative we played the Eden Course (one of the other 6 courses). They call it the Old Course "lite". It actually travels along the Old Course so you can enjoy some views of others playing the Old Course… ahhh so close yet so far.

But the Eden Course was still very similar to the Old Course. Shorter and simpler, with some nice features including its signature farmhouse on the first hole. We enjoyed our quick round and then had plenty of time to walk around the complex, visit the Old Course Club House and watch all the families play on The Himalayas 18-hole putting course, open to all ages and skill levels. It’s a very family friendly location for sure and the town of St. Andrews is very quaint and filled with Bed & Breakfasts galore, as well as Pubs and Shops – and of course it’s own Cathedral and Castle.

A true Golfer’s delight and an at least once in a lifetime trip!

Kingsbarns, Scotland July 2015

Kingsbarns Golf Links, St. Andrews, Scotland July 2015

A short drive from St. Andrews, if you are going to St. Andrews, Kingsbarns Golf Links should not be missed. While it is more expensive than the Old Course at St. Andrews and probably pricier than it should be, the stunning panorama views along the North Sea Coast are worth the round. But for your money you do get a welcome “kit” with a Bag Tag, Tees, Markers, Pencils and Yardage Book!

Our concierge, Ramsey was extremely welcoming and the Pro Shop staff very nice. We enjoyed our round with a lovely Australian couple and our caddy Neill who really helped to make the round more manageable. As with most links courses, there are dips and hills, twists and turns. While the course is walk-able for sure, having the caddy’s knowledge helped our scores (somewhat, as we still had to execute against the advice). Liz opened the day with a birdie on hole 1 - unfortunately that was the highlight of the round, along with a few Pars!

The first 9 holes had many views of the sea - bring your camera and also remember to turn around when walking; many of the views were even more beautiful from behind. The back 9 is very beautiful as well, with some extra-special bunkers and a section called “The Trees”. Also a public “park” there is a walking path that hikers can take called the Coastal Trail. Apparently you can walk for 3 days along it and reach Edinburgh.

This course had the best yardage markers for sure. Each of fairways 200, 150 and 100 standard markers included to the front, middle and back. It also had the more traditional Tee-Box. You can see both in the photo below (upper right). As per Scottish tradition, the Tee-Box and the Teeing Ground (what we call the Tee-Box) are different. The Tee-Box in Scotland (pictured below) was traditionally used to hold sand that the golfers would use to make a "Tee" by filling a small pyramid shaped tool with sand. They would turn over the pyramid and get a raised area to place their ball. Today we use wooden and plastic Tees.

A quaint restaurant awaits, where you can sit a spell after your round or head back to St. Andrews to The Jigger Inn and enjoy a post round meal while watching players on the Old Course’s 17th Fairway.

Glenneagles – Centenary Course. Host of the 2014 Ryder Cup, Scotland July 2015

The Glenneagles grounds consist of a resort, three (and ½) golf courses and several other activities including Falconry. Of the three courses, the Centenary was the home of the 2014 Ryder Cup – so that is the most popular course and the one we played. However, once we got to Scotland and started chatting with the locals, they all recommended the King Course, because it is more traditional. The other course is called the Queen Course, both of which are James Braid designs. Jack Nicklaus designed the Centenary course. There is also a Par 3 9 hole course that we were told was a ton of fun to play, but we unfortunately did not leave time to fit that in.

We played with a terrific kid (17) Jamie and his dad PJ, coincidentally also from NYC! They were on a family golf trip with mom Jill and younger brother Charlie who enjoyed the Par 3 course while we played the Centenary. Jamie is a great player out-driving Jeff many times! The course is very long and hilly with some long walks between tee-boxes (a trolly was quite the effort to push - better to carry your clubs if you can or get a Caddie!) and is a parkland American-style course. The course was very lush and green with lots of fescue and tons of bunkers – you know - the usual!

But it was pretty neat to walk in the shoes of both the Americans and Europeans who played during the Ryder Cup! If you get here, plan on 2 ½ rounds (Centenary, King and the Par 3).

North Berwick, Scotland - July 2015

North Berwick Golf Club West Links, eastcoast, east of Edinburgh Scotland - July 2015

The first of our Scotland golfing and our favorite golf course – yes, even better than St. Andrews! Although our overall visit to the town of St. Andrews was the best experience of our time in Scotland.

Start times for visitors are not until after 12:30pm. We had the first slot – 12:36pm. (And apparently there are no exceptions, cause we tried!).

The course has so much character and quirkiness, and allowed for a fun and energetic round. We were paired up with a nice couple from Canada. The gal (Cynthia) was a Golf Pro and played from the “Gents” Tees…Liz was not intimidated at all (yikes)! The Starter, Sam, was incredibly welcoming and helped us to relax and encouraged us to just get out there and have a great time.

From the first hole with a giant rock formation in the middle of the fairway that you need to carry over to the green, to the stonewall that crosses two holes (and you need to hit over it twice - on the way in and out), to the 13th hole which is located so close to the beach, you may have to play your shot from there (Jeff did!), to the 17th "double" green with a huge dip splitting them - you will not be bored!

The layout is very simple, 8 holes in one direction, turn on 9 and 10-18 on the way back. The Firth of Forth (body of water) was ever present and could be seen from almost every hole. There are several rock formations just off the coast including Bass Rock and one that was said to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson to write Treasure Island.

Besides getting to St. Andrews, if you enjoy golf this is a MUST play in Scotland. After your round take a stroll through the town and enjoy a nice dinner in one of the small restaurants that stay open (we dined at Zitto and it was fantastic!) - the shops do close early unfortunately.

Dalmahoy Marriott Champion East Golf Course

Dalmahoy Marriott Golf Course, Scotland - July 2015

On a beautiful setting about 15 minutes from Edinburgh, the Dalmahoy Marriott Hotel & Country Club has two golf courses, the Championship East Course and the West Course, both designed by James Braid.

The East Course has most recently hosted the Scottish Seniors Open in 2006, 2007 and 2008. We played the East Course. It is a park-setting course spread over acres of stunning Scottish countryside and surrounded by woodlands, streams, lakes and the Pentland Mountain. It’s an easy walking course with tight holes but still plenty of character. Thick rough but less fescue than the other courses we had been playing (a nice break).

The hotel’s main lobby and restaurants are in a Mansion setting just adjacent to the East Course and a great place to relax with a beverage after your round. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Congrats to Michelle from the Golf Shop on her 25 years with Marriott in August!

Powerscourt Golf Club, County Wicklow Ireland (Eastcoast) - July 2015

30 minutes from Dublin and just down the road from the Powerscourt Hotel, Marriott Autograph Collection. There are two courses, the East and West and the complex was Voted Best Parkland Golf Course in Ireland 2014 by Golfer's Guide to Ireland.

We played the East Course. The East Course was designed by Walker cup captain Peter McEvoy and is a park-like course perfectly manicured, with huge beautiful trees and spectacular views of the Wicklow Mountain range featuring the Sugarloaf peak. The course is hilly and has lush and vibrant greens. Absolutely gorgeous.

The West Course was designed by David Mclay Kidd’s (Bandon Dunes in Oregon) and is completely different. We did not get to play it unfortunately but suspect it is a Links course.

If you are headed to Ireland, make time to get over to the Powerscourt area. Besides the Golf Course, it is a completely relaxing atmosphere with the spectacular Marriott hotel (including a Spa), a Garden (separate small fee - but worth it, give yourself at least 2 hours just to walk around), a Waterfall and a small quaint town.

Four days will get you time to golf twice, enjoy the Gardens and have time to relax and use the spa.

Royal Portmarnock Golf Course

Royal Portmarnock Golf Course, Ireland (Eastcoast) July 2015

One of the top rated courses in the world, this classic seaside links was pricey but was an amazing experience. You are greeted by a host that guides you to either the dinning room (proper attire needed –no hats) or the practice area until your tee-time.

Breakfast or Lunch is included. We would recommend a late morning tee-time. Enjoy a hearty breakfast to fuel your walk! No Buggies (Golfcart) allowed unless you provide a medical note, but they have Trollies (Pullcarts) if you do not carry your clubs. You can arrange for a caddie for an additional fee, but are not needed as the yardage book (a must, 5 Euros) is well labeled.

Holes 12 – 15 are seaside with fantastic views and winds. Now apparently the winds we experienced was not windy at all for the locals, but be prepared for changes in weather – dress in layers and bring a light rain jacket.

Tons of fescue and deep bunkers with light fluffy sand, which makes it a smidge easier to escape (and according to Jeff the best bunkers he has ever hit from). Watch out for the blind tee-shot on hole 5, yardage books says to aim for two tall chimneys, but if it's cloudy they will not be in sight – rather, aim for the large white “dot” on the hill!

Jeff eagled the Par 5 6th Hole but didn't get to witness it - thankfully Liz was in view to see the ball drop from Jeff's pitch from the rough about 90 yards away (see photo below upper right!)

Druids Glen Resort

Druids Glen Golf Course, Ireland (Eastcoast), July 2015

Self-proclaimed the “Augusta of Europe” Druids Glen is a park-land course absolutely perfectly manicured. While we have not (yet - we can hope) played Augusta, we happened upon some other visitors who had - and they said Augusta is still “a most special place and none can really compare”.

Designed by Pat Ruddy (also designer of The European Club) & Tom Craddock, the course opened in 1995. Just a year after opening, Druids Glen hosted the Irish Open for four years in a row.

Your are welcomed by a mansion-esk club house building that is a Members course but very hospitable to visitors.

The course is lush and luxuriously green with touches of stone bridges, waterways, hills and very creative shrubbery – you can't miss the Celtic Cross and the Druids Glen Logo. Well done grounds crew!

Our only recommendation would be an update to the hole markers, that look like small tombstones (yikes!).

The European Club

The European Club, Ireland (East coast) - July 2015

About an hour southeast of Dublin, located way off the beaten path, we played on a Friday, which apparently is the least popular day to play this course. There were a total of 9 players the whole time we were there – but that could also partly have to do with the rainy weather.

The course was designed by Pat Ruddy, who, based on some of the golf books he wrote, is all-in to this game of golf. Self-proclaimed the "Perfect Golf Links", The European Club was name a top-100 in the world.

The staff at the Clubhouse could not have been more pleasant and accommodating. With the soggy-ish weather they were so flexible with our tee-time and allowed us to take a nice mid-round break to dry and warm up a bit (even dried our clothes). While it was thankfully not pouring, it was nice to have some warm tea between rounds – a first for us from the states for sure, along with a few of the other visitors from California!

Despite the rain, we had the most enjoyable round – the course is spectacular and a must if getting to Ireland’s east coast. Many of the holes are played along the Irish Sea with spectacular views. Take a pause between the 15th & 16th holes for the view - soak it in and snap a few pictures!

The front 9 is the more challenging side - tighter and more accuracy needed. They have 2 "extra" holes (7a and 12a) so depending on the course set up you may play 19 holes - we played 7a which ended up being Liz's favorite, a short Par 3 surrounded entirely by fescue - Liz made it on the Green and par'd it! (picture lower right)

There are enormous bunkers through the course and the craziest burn just before the 18th green. While there are hundreds of courses in Ireland to choose from, if you are on the east coast this is a MUST play! Enjoy.

JW Marriott Hill Country TPC San Antonio

JW Marriott Hill Country, TPC San Antonio, TX Feb 2015

A business trip to San Antonio allowed us the opportunity to golf two more Marriott Golf Courses - TPC San Antonio. We enjoyed a beautiful stay at the JW Marriott Hill Country and golfed both The Canyons and The Oaks courses. The Oaks Course (a Greg Norman design) is home to the Valero Texas Open that was actually arriving in just a few weeks, so we had pristine course conditions and watched as the many grandstands were being built.

The two courses were different but both enjoyable.

The Canyons course is a Pete Dye designed course and so what you see is not what you get on the Greens. Speaking of the Greens, besides never really knowing which way the ball was going to roll - they were this very cool unique dark hunter green. And I decide I was going to write a book called "Putt, Pray, Par". There was really no rough, no color and only some natural grasses bordering the fairways. The back 9 was definitely more forward friendly. It was a fun round.

The Oaks course had been over seeded and was incredibly lush and green. Our Starter cautioned that for first time players it would be like being on a roller coast for the first time. However, thankfully - it was not as "harrowing" as anticipated. From our Tee-boxes it was a playable course but taking a view from the Tips, we can see how the pros will have "fun" with the course. Timing was good for us as the rough was still low so not many balls went lost. Two Par-3s entirely over water defintely made the round a bit more challenging.

The Golf Cart technology is awesome. No need for signage as the GPS is great. Each Golf Designer provides a fly-over description of each hole and the cart is sure to let you know when you have gone too close to the Green as it just stops and you have to reverse to get going again! They also have Ball and Club Cleaners on each cart - very convenient.

If you enjoy Golf then a trip to Hill Country is a must. The hotel and its grounds are absolutely beautiful. And the two golf courses give you plenty of rounds to enjoy - you'll want to go at them a 2nd time, so give yourself that time. Enjoy!

Wildfire Golf Club, JW Marriott Desert Ridge, Arnold Palmer Course - July 2014

The Wildfire Golf Club is home to two 18-Hole Golf Courses, Faldo and Palmer. We played the Palmer Course on a July morning starting out with a balmy 98 degrees at 6:30am! The heat kicked it up a notch by the back nine - but plenty of water and ice cold melon scented towels got us to 18.

The clubhouse is one of the largest we have seen with an array of golf attire and accessories. The staff was super friendly and welcoming. We played with a nice couple, Cathy and Bob from North Carolina.

The course is well manicured with just about every species of cacti. We certainly knew we were playing desert golf; however, there was plenty of green to keep your ball safe if you have decent accuracy. As long as you keep it in the fairway (but really, how many of us do that?) there is not a lot of trouble.

No water to be found until about 17th when you come upon the only pond, which after 17 holes in over 100 degrees – we thought it was an oasis mirage and it took all we had to not jump in!

This is a forward friendly course with an extra “layer” of forward Tee-boxes, of which I happily took the advantage provided! Tee markers are the signature Arnold Palm Umbrellas - are a nice touch.

Be sure to enjoy lunch after your round at the Meritage Steakhouse – the food was fantastic!

Camelback Golf Club, JW Marriott Camelback - “In All The World Only One”

Camelback Golf Club, JW Marriott Camelback - “In All The World Only One” - July 2014

The Camelback Golf Club has two courses, Padre and Ambiente. We played the newly renovated Ambiente (Spanish for Environment). They cut down 800 trees and replaced them with natural grasses to reduce the need for water – and create a more desert natural setting.

An enjoyable round is yours if you play smart and straight. There are not a lot of forced carries or obstacles unless you veer off course too much! The Greens however are in “pro” condition - probably running about 11 or 12 on the stimp meter, so bring your best putting.

A couple of the holes play against Camelback and Mummy mountains – so bring your camera!

We played with Scott and Mike, two local Arizonians who were practicing for a 2-man Best Ball Tournament the next day. They did pretty well – so hopefully the practice paid off for them during the real round.

The Tee-Box Markers are shaped like camels – very cute. Teal is the new red and the color of the forward tees, which on some holes could have been a smidge more forward!

Thanks to the staff and a shout out to Rob Bartley, Director of Golf for the great and friendly service.

The JW Marriott Camelback is a must visit! The hotel, its rooms and grounds are unique and relaxing. The staff is very attentive. Between the Spa, the Pool and the Golf a wonderful long weekend awaits you (consider a visit Oct – April – will be a smidge cooler!)

The Golf Club at Dove Mountain, The Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain - July 2014

The Golf Club at Dove Mountain, The Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain - July 2014

Travel 90-minutes south of Phoenix and you will cool down about 20 degrees! There are 81 holes in and around the Dove Mountain area. We played The Golf Club at Dove Mountain and it reminded us how much we love “mountain golf” – which is where we started 17 years ago in Vail Colorado.

There are 3 9-hole Jack Nicklaus courses, Saguaro, Tortolita and Wild Burro. We played Tortolita and Wild Burro and was joined by James from San Francisco, accompanied by his wife Christina.

While there was quite the array of cacti and you knew you were in a desert atmosphere, there was still plenty of luscious green grass. Natural beauty surrounds you the entire round. Plenty of elevated Tee-boxes provided the viewing platform to watch your ball in flight against the mountain backdrop.

From the forward tees it’s a very playable course - if you keep it straight enough you’ll stay out of trouble. From the rest of the tee boxes there are “fun” and challenging carries. Many of the approaches also had some challenging carries over waste bunkers for all to enjoy. The greens had a lot of character and undulations, but were also soft and slow – and the hole placements were very creative. Ball washers were missing from the course and the carts – so bring along an extra towel.

In most of our travels and pairings with other golfers, Jeff’s long ball is usually very impressive. However, James certainly has a great game and bombed it passed Jeff on several holes!

The Ritz-Carlton hotel is a beautiful lodge-like setting with about 250 rooms. The grounds are very relaxing with several pools and a Spa. There are resort activities and it is very kid-welcoming. The restaurant food was delicious as well. Our time at this Marriott hotel was definitely too short – so we hope to return to enjoy the accommodations and get another shot at golfing – perhaps in a cooler time of year!

Ko Olina Golf, Oahu Hawaii - Dec 2013

Ko Olina Golf Club at the JW Marriott Ihlani Hotel, Oahu Hawaii - Dec 2013

Thanks again to my job with Marriott we headed to Hawaii and lucky for us a chance to golf another Marriott resort! My work took us to the island of Oahu where the Ko Olina Golf Club resides.

The golf club and Marriott's JW Hotel is on a beautiful corner of the island called Ihlani and is about 45 minutes from the downtown hustle and bustle. In the upper right of the picture below you can see the lagoons that form a crescent where the hotel is located. The golf club is just down the road.

The course was very pretty - heck - we are in Hawaii, how could it not be! But it did not have many views of the Ocean, so if you are looking for that, try the course on the other side of the Island near where Barack Obama's home is! Coincidentally the Obama family flew in for the holidays the day after we left. We were told by our Helicopter pilot that we had great timing, as we circled the entire island - we would not have been able to do that once the President and family arrived.

It's a nice, somewhat simple course with the highlight of the "waterfall" hole! Relax and enjoy a round on this course while you enjoy this area of the Oahu Island and get away from downtown Honolulu! It is worth the ride for sure! Be sure to stay at the JW - it's a very beautiful and relaxing hotel with a Spa and some lovely restaurants. Enjoy!

Kohler WI – The American Club - Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run, Oct 2013

Kohler WI – The American Club - Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run, Oct 2013

If you thought the name Kohler just meant Bathtubs, Sinks and Toilets – think again! The Kohler Family and Company were visionaries starting with John Michael Kohler and then his son Walter Kohler who in 1918 opened the American Club as a home for their immigrant workers. Now led by Herb Kohler the American Club is a resort, golf destination and town filled with friendly people, several lodging options, the Waters Spa, many delicious restaurant options and of course shopping - you can even get a 3-hour tour of the Kohler Factory. But we came for the golf –so let’s talk golf! For more information on Kohler visit their website http://www.americanclubresort.com/.

And Golf we did – in sunshine, rain and fog – lots of fog - we golfed through it all. Thankfully it was not too cold and there was no snow!

There are four courses all designed by Pete Dye. Blackwolf Run is the home of the River and Meadow Valleys courses about 5 minutes from lodging and they are similar but different – as are the Straits and Irish courses housed at Whistling Straits which is about 20 minutes away from the “town”. There are shuttles buses that will take you to both. Each of the 72 holes are named and each have five Tee boxes marked with colored stones (Black(Tips), Blue, Green, White and Red). There are filtered water stations throughout the courses and every bathroom features different Kohler sinks and toilets.

We met some wonderful people during our stay – include the “Great Eight” as we decided to name this terrific group of men from Illinois who for whatever reason we crossed paths with about twice a day. They were so much fun to meet that we swapped information and hope to meet up with them on our next visit to the Chicago area – or perhaps they will head out to NY and play Bethpage Black with us!

The Straits Course at Whistling Straits

OK – back to Golf…we’ll start with the most famous one first…

The Straits Course at Whistling Straits

The most recognized course where the PGA Championship has been held three times and the future home to the Ryder Cup 2020, the Straits is charming and intimidating at the same time.

The Whistling Straits Clubhouse architecture has the traditions of Scotland and adds to the breathtaking atmosphere and views of the course when you first arrive. Due to impending rain we swung by the Straits Course on our first day and we were provided a tour by a really friendly staff member, Katie, that including many photo ops while the sun was shining bright – including a visit with the sheep (which live and roam free on the course)! In many ways there was a similar feel to Pebble Beach and Bandon Dunes as eight holes play along Lake Michigan. It is spectacular. Thank you Katie!

The Straits is a walking only course and caddies are required (and needed)! Our Caddy was Dylan and he was fantastic! He was the perfect combination of guidance, support and fun. If not for his impeccable knowledge of the course, the back nine would not have been playable as unfortunately the fog enveloped the course. Dylan’s use of creative targeting helped us to find the fairways and greens with minimal loss of golf balls and still resulted in decent rounds.

Be prepared – there is a lot of sand on this course. Ask different people and you will get a variety of answers on how much sand was brought in – as this course was built up from flat farmland to mounds and mounds and mounds of sand traps. The par 3 12th hole is reminiscent of number 7 at Pebble Beach – on the edge of the water with no room for error!

Since the back nine was like playing blind (as the fog rolled in off of Lake Michigan by this point), we missed the total experience of the Straits – shucks – guess we’ll just have to get back there to play it again! Thanks again to Dylan for the great round!

NOTE: Our package came with an hour lesson which we took prior to playing the Straits. The lesson was with Mike O’Reilly, the head Golf Professional. Mike was super nice and provided us both with some great tips. Thanks Mike!

The Straits 3

The Irish Course

The Irish Course

The Irish Course is in the same complex as the Straits so the atmosphere was just as beautiful. We got a full round in tip-toeing through the rain drops and fog.

Lush and green the Irish course has as many sand traps as the Straits Course, is more inland and although it does not play along Lake Michigan, there are water hazards to avoid - so your skills are still put to the test.

Another beautiful walk, take along a Caddy – it will make the experience even better, although you do have the option of taking a cart and/or a forecaddie.

The Irish

The Irish

The River

The River

Our first round was actually at the Blackwolf Run’s River Course. We played with a terrific couple – Ken and Kada from WI – we love playing with “locals”. Ken was an inch taller than Jeff – that doesn’t happen very often! Kada hit a great ball and got some great length even with her “older/tiny” woods.

The River course was spectacularly manicured and runs along the Sheboygan River. We later learned this is the hardest of the four courses – mostly because the Greens are like putting on ice – 3 and 4 putts up’d our scores a bit – but the challenge was “fun”, although even by the 18th hole we were still putting passed the cup!

The weather was amazing this day for October in Wisconsin. This was our best day during our visit as the sun shined bright all day! It also happened to be Salmon Spawning season so we caught many a salmon fighting the current. The River is the most picturesque with beautiful flowers, stonework edging the river and an abundance of trees which during this time of year were quite colorful. The design of this course was creative and challenging. There were elevation changes with twists and turns which required thoughtful shot-making – especially being distracted by its beauty. Water was in play or in view on every hole.

Although the course was challenging we had an absolutely wonderful time and enjoyed our round with Ken and Kada – thanks for sharing it with us!

Meadow Valleys

Meadow Valleys

The course appropriately resembles a meadow - as each hole is surrounded by tall grassy shrubbery - which apparently is a natural feature of the Wisconsin terrain. The fairways are generously wide and it is the easiest of the four courses. One unique feature of Meadow Valleys is the 18th hole’s double green. There is a Red Flag for the Red Tee Box and a White Flag for all the other Tee Boxes. The Red Tee Box gets to skip the carry over the water – thanks Pete!

Our Forecaddy was Gary - another swell Wisconsin local! A former professional, his lively and outgoing personality added to the enjoyment of the round.

The Meadow Valleys course was home to the US Women’s Open which was held in July 2012, and the course they played was actually a composite of the River and Meadow Valleys.

Kohler, WI Closing

If you are a golf enthusiast, Kohler WI is a MUST visit destination! If you want to play all four courses we suggest spending 5 nights/6 days – take one day off from golf to enjoy the town and all its offerings. Plus depending on the package you select, some of the courses have complimentary replays – so leave time for those as well.

We can’t wait to go back!

West Virginia Mulligan - The Greenbrier

Our West Virgina Mulligan - THE GREENBRIER, May 2013

Straight from the website - we could not have said it better, "The Greenbrier is an award-winning resort located in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. As a National Historic landmark, The Greenbrier Resort's classic architecture, exquisite interior design, carefully sculpted landscape, impeccable service and outstanding amenities have hosted distinguished guests from around the world since 1778." And they were RIGHT! We were amazed and thrilled to walk in the footsteps of the talented and powerful. Historic pictures around the estate denote the "greats" that have visited The Greenbrier. We came for the golf, but enjoyed so much more.

But this is a golf blog, so we'll stick to talking about that! The Greenbrier has three courses to choose from, The Greenbrier, The Meadows and the most famous, The Old White. The Old White TPC is home to The Greenbrier Classic PGA TOUR event, is the oldest course currently used for a PGA TOUR event as well as the only C. B. Macdonald course available to the public! We played, of course, The Old White - and we played The Meadows. Both courses were impeccably landscaped.

To have the honor of playing The Old White there is a "surcharge". Was it worth it? Maybe - to say we played - absolutely! But compared to Pebble Beach - maybe a little more than it should be (thankfully there is a Casino on property that you can try your luck and hopefully re-coup for the extra fee!). We had spectacular weather and enjoyed the round with Tony and Jeff (brothers), accompanied by our Forecaddie Duane. The course was being staged for the July pro tournament, so the rough was pretty darn rough! Each hole was named and had a story to go along with it. The greens were each different, even the speeds! Spectacular views and some amazing houses surround the course, including a view of Nick Faldo's house way high atop a mountain. Liz made the most of her round with plenty of (unfortunately) extra shots - but enjoyed nonetheless. Ending on a Par-3 is always fun - not enough course do that. There is a great photo-op at the bunker of the forward Tee with the Greenbrier logo.

The Meadows was an even more picturesque course and shorter (and easier!) Liz thankfully got back many a shot during this round...oh so close to breaking 100 starting the round with 2 pars in a row! A little more character on this course, the Tee markers were Tom Watson (Tips), Sam Snead (Blue), The Springhouse (White) and a Rhododendron (Red) (side note - the Rhododendron is the West Virginia State Flower and in Greek means "Rose" "Tree" or Romance). Each hole also is named and has a story - be sure to read the Tee Box signs. A 2nd wonderful round at the Greenbrier was had on another beautiful weather day - we were lucky!

If you love Golf, spectacular outdoors, beauty, peace and quiet consider a visit to Greenbrier. It's a special place for special occasions - many an Anniversary was being celebrated as we met the other lovely guests throughout the weekend. So much more to do than golf - Spa, Tennis, Horseback Riding, Art Gallery/Museum, much more - and the famous Bunker that was built in 196s for Congress for fear of a Nuclear attack. A very interesting tour provides a great understanding of the magnitude of thoughtfulness and secrecy that went into its creation.

Gaylord Opryland

GAYLORD OPRYLAND SPRINGS GOLF COURSE, Nashville TN April 2013

A new hotel to Marriott, The Gaylord Opryland also owns the Gaylord Springs Golf Links. During a visit to the hotel we played a round of golf with a Gaylord alumni Chip Rowe and had the chance to meet the Golf Course Head Pro Harry Taylor and the GM, James Paschal and welcomed them to the Marriott family!

We did play very early in the season so the greens were not so green but it was great to get a look at the course and we enjoyed our round best we could tip-toeing through the raindrops. The course is carved from the banks of the Cumberland River, and is a Scottish links-style, par-72 layout offering 18 challenging holes bordered by limestone bluffs. This golf course was named one of the Tennessee’s Top Public Courses by GolfWeek Magazine. The 43,000-square-foot, antebellum-style clubhouse is beautiful with a spectacular view of the golf course and perfect for the many weddings it hosts each year.

Of course while in Nashville TN you MUST make a visit to the Grand Ole Opry and take the backstage tour - it was fantastic - whether you are a country music enthusiast or not!

Cowboy Golf

DALLAS COWBOYS GOLF COURSE, Dallas TX - March 2013

While in Dallas Texas for a visit to one of Marriott's newest hotels - The Gaylord Texan we played the golf course owned by the Dallas Cowboy Football Team. While it was not a Marriott Golf Course its reputation was too good to pass up playing a round. It was a beautiful course that intertwined the history of the team by displaying a summary of momentous occasions at every tee-box. The 4th hole has a "Lone Star" in the center of it's fairway - supposedly if your tee-shot lands on the star you'll get a "cheer" from some of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders (of which we were not even close to the Star, to find out if this was even remotely true!).

Look for a golf package that include all food and non-alcoholic beverages - is a good deal if you are hungry! The Staff was very welcoming and friendly. We definitely enjoyed the round - Liz especially as she shot a 94! One of her lowest - and with rental clubs... of which she is now looking to purchase a few of those Taylor Made woods she was using.

Heron Bay, FL

HERON BAY Golf Course, FL_ Marriott Coral Springs Hotel, Golf Club & Convention Center. 2012

Famous as the former host of the PGA Honda Classic we golfed a round at Heron Bay Golf Course which is attached to the Marriott Coral Springs Hotel. The remembrance of the Classic was exciting to see - knowing that many of the "greats" had played these holes before us. In typical Florida weather fashion we had a delay in game to a monster thunderstorm that thankfully passed by fairly quickly.

The course was very nice, as were the staff. We particularly loved the details the GPS provided especially showing the waaaaaay toooooooo many sand traps! Needless to say we felt like we went to the beach rather than golfing - but as always made the best of the round.

CALIFORNIA TOUR - JUNE 2012

CA_Half Moon Bay Ritz Carlton Resort and Golf - June 2012

The Ritz Carlton at Half Moon Bay’s location is one of the best in America for ocean views and sunsets. Perched high up on the bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean this intimate feeling resort setting is spectacular. Thankfully because it’s part of the Marriott family we headed there for our first stop on our California Golf Tour, as we continue on our quest to golf all Marriott Golf Resorts.

The hotel included two golf courses, the Old Course and the Ocean Course. We played both of course and each had their distinct character.

The Old Course was a parkland style course and had good length, was very well manicured with super fast greens and forward friendly. The course mostly wound inland through beautiful homes. The ending hole was well worth the wait! The breathtaking view at 18 headed up toward the resort with a welcomed sight of the ocean. Overall we loved the course. Note - be sure to ask for or buy a yardage book. The scorecards do not have a map of the course, nor do the carts (same for Ocean course).

The Ocean Course was of course, more along the ocean. This links style course was also well manicured but with the native grass and fescue, accuracy is the key to success. The views are wonderfully distracting. For us, the ocean breezes were a bit more than welcomed, but we made the best of it...until 18! Ladies will be thankful for the forward friendliness. For those playing from the Blues the course ends with a Par 5 blind 200-yard uphill carry over a ravine - but with the wind blowing at 30 miles an hour it felt more like 400 yards for Jeff and thus he had to take a drop on the fairway since we had no idea where the ball went!

Although we enjoyed our rounds, because the golf courses are connected to a Ritz Carlton and for the price ($), based on all our travels we had higher expectations for service from the staff. We learned later that the golf course is not run by Marriott, so perhaps they can use a little hospitality training! We do want to mention we met a nice fellow named Nick who stirred up a mean hot chocolate to keep us warm - thanks Nick!

Be sure to enjoy a scrumptious dinner in either of the restaurants over looking the ocean views and the Old Course’s 18th hole. And depending on when you are there, dine at an hour that will allow you time to relax outside by the fire pits and watch the sunset. Blankets and s’more-making kits provided!

Pebble Beach Complex

CA_ Pebble Beach - June 2012

Only 90 minutes south of Half Moon Bay is the Monterey Peninsula and home of the legendary Pebble Beach. And although they were not Marriotts as we passed through on our way down to Palm Desert how could we not play a round or two in the Pebble Beach complex!

A mulligan at Pebble Beach Golf Links ten years later! Even though we said it was once in a lifetime, after calling the day prior to see if a Tee-time happen to be available - and it was! - it’s now an every 10-year plan.

A second thrilling walk through the footsteps of the greats, our round at Pebble Beach was just as wonderful as the first time. Jeff par’d 1 and 2 - and birdie’d 18, Liz par’d 4! In between lets just say we had a great time! We shared the round with Chris (and his wife along for the ride) and Mike, as well as Nick our Caddie and Gabe Mike’s Caddie. We had lots of laughs, some great shots and not so great shots - and rumor had it Arnold Palmer was in the restaurant - perhaps he saw Jeff’s Birdie on 18!?!

The next day we played The Links at Spanish Bay (for our first time). A most beautiful course with many holes along the coast the course layout is creative - especially 17 - that was a beauty of a hole. The Par 3 at 14 is also a great photo op. A smidge more difficult than Pebble - target golf is helpful if you got it in your bag! Each hole is named - be sure to get a yardage book for some tips and reasons for the names. Gabe was our Caddie and we played with Deb and Richard from Houston. There was some crazy wind during our round - especially on the last 4 holes that boarder the coast. Look below for the picture of us with the Flag being blown over - it was a bit more windy than normal!

If you don’t want to stay on the Pebble Beach complex the Monterey Marriott is less than 10 minutes away! A pretty hotel just a block from the Wharf and the beach - coincidentally Mike, Deb and Richard were also staying there. Shout out to Amanda and the staff at the hotel - thanks for the hospitality!

Palm Desert - JW Marriott

CA_ Desert Springs A JW Marriott Resort and Spa - June 2012

We played the beautiful golf course of the JW Marriott Resort and Spa. At only 98 - it was a “cool” afternoon in terms of the Desert - they tell us. We played a few holes with John and Luke from Tucson, AZ. They were a lot of fun, and although they were from AZ, apparently the heat is different here in the desert and they headed for the pool after 9!

The course has a ton of Palm Trees. Actually, we noticed a nice crescent design of Palm Trees surrounding most of the greens. And for our convenience there are sand traps conveniently placed so if you hit a Palm Tree your ball falls right into the trap!

A nice touch of character the Tee Hole Signs and Tee Markers carry through the clubs humming bird logo.

Palm Desert - Indian Wells

CA_ Indian Wells at Esmeralda Renaissance Resort. - June 2012

With one of the most beautiful clubhouses we have seen - we learned it was built just a few years ago and they certainly made some excellent architectural and décor selections. The lobby is like a hotel and the Pro Shop is huge with an extended golf and clothing store.

There are two courses, The Celebrity and The Players. The Players was closed, so we were only able to play the Celebrity. It was a beautiful course surrounded by Mountains with many picturesque opportunities. The Indian Wells logo was pulled through on the Tee signs and Tee Markers - nice small touch.

We played the back 9 with Rick and Kevin. It was great to meet them and coincidentally Kevin is in the Health and Fitness industry and is trying to do some work with Dr. Oz and Healthcorps the organization’s Sacramento office. Jeff and I volunteer for the office NYC.

It made it to triple digits and it actually did feel hotter! Just a couple of degrees made a difference. But armed with plenty of sunscreen and water - and a couple of Arnold Palmers and we were fine!

CA_ Palm Desert- Shadow Ridge - June 2012

Another beautiful desert golf course that winds through the Marriott's Shadow Ridge Villas. It's quite convenient for those staying on property. A great Marriott brand option for families with several pools and activity options to keep the kids busy - while the parents golf! The course was designed by Nick Faldo and based on other courses of his that we have played (one being Cottonwood Hills in Kansas - see our description of that under our 50-State section below), this was rather tame by comparison - we believe this was the first US course he designed.

TPC Sawgrass - Stadium Course

FLORIDA TOUR - JUNE 2011

TPC Sawgrass - Stadium Course
- June 2011

Although the Stadium Course does demand your respect, especially because of The Players Championship, and although it was beautiful - and challenging, the $375.00 greens fee we thought was just a smidge excessive. Are we glad we played it? Most definitely! Did we enjoy the round? Yes and no! Yes, because it was amazing to walk in the footsteps of the greatest golfers. No, because our round of golf was just not up to par! The anticipation as we got closer to 17 was exhilarating! Did we make the Island Green? Yes and No! Liz’s Wilson Staff hit on…and proceeded to pop right off. Jeff on the other hand, missed with both shots! But when he dropped on the green for a 50 foot putt - he made that.

If it’s your first time - go for it - what’s another Benjamin for the guidance they provide? Ours was Marc, who just happened to grow up a town away from Jeff on Long Island (although 10 years apart) and regaled us with many of his high school sporting stories. The rough is rough, stay out of it - enough said. The staff was very friendly. The clubhouse is spectacular and the paintings of memorable moments were quite beautiful.

The Sawgrass Marriott Resort and Spa’s lobby is open and spacious with a view of the lagoon and a slight view of the 13th hole of the Stadium Course. We met a lovely front desk associate, Traci, who accommodated us in a nice room with a view of the lagoon. The rooms were standard Marriott, clean and comfortable, although it would be nicer if the “Juliet balcony” was a full size that can be enjoyed. They surround the center atrium of the lobby providing a safe and open feeling. If you prefer to feel more “at home” you can consider a Villa Suite that includes a full kitchen. These are separate from the main building but there are bridges to walk through to access the facilities. There are two pools; one is adult only, along with Jacuzzis. Great shuttle service to the Golf Course (5 minutes away) and to their private beach called the Cabana Club (about 10 minutes away).

World Golf Village - St. Augustine Renassiance, Florida

World Golf Village - St. Augustine Renaissance, Florida - June 2011

“Disneyland” for the golf enthusiast! The grounds include the Golf Hall of Fame that is abundant with the most amazing memorabilia, documenting the beginnings of the game of golf through the new technology we all enjoy today. Be sure to give yourself at least 2 hours to enjoy the museum. Included are interactive areas where you can putt like you were back in the 1880s, simulate playing a Par-3, and a modern putting challenge. Head to the top of the building for a great view of the complex, as well as seeing up close the golf trophies from many of the championships - including the US Open and the Claret Jug. Included in your Golf Hall of Fame ticket price is a “round” of putting at the 18-hole Putting Challenge and one shot at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium #17 replica hole that is the center of the complex. Get a hole-in-one and win a fabulous prize. We were told they see about two a year! Get on twice and win a consolation prize. Don’t get on at all - get - the joy of trying … without paying $375.00.

Leave time for shopping at the PGA Tour Stop. Two-floors filled with golf apparel and equipment. Also be sure to take in lunch or dinner at The Murray Brothers’ Caddy Shack - a fun restaurant with memorabilia from the fantastic movie that Bill Murray made historic. We learned that there are actually six Murray brothers, one of which runs the restaurant.

The Renaissance hotel is a fabulous place to stay located within the Golf World Village. The lobby is modern, open and comfortable with free Wi-Fi and enough flat-screen monitors to watch every sport event on the air! The staff was very friendly and helpful.

King and Bear - World Golf Village

King and Bear - World Golf Village

The only golf course designed by Arnold Palmer (the King) and Jack Nicklaus (the Bear). This course is located about 2 miles from World Golf Village. It is nothing less than expected; the course was beautiful, creative, fun and challenging. The staff was very friendly and the Starter provided great guidance.

The carts had GPS and yardage - including an on-line scorecard. A barrel of crisp and cold apples await you on 1 and 10. And, ice cold and mango-scented towels are available to keep you cool in the hotter months of Florida. Just the right amount of water to not remind you of TPC Sawgrass!

Stonework, sand and shrubbery are spectacularly placed, so that the views are enjoyable the entire round. Arnold’s favorite hole is 15, Jack’s 16 - make sure you take a read of the sign that explains it all. The GPS system in the golf cart was one of the finest we have encountered so far. The distances provided were not only to the Pin, but also to the Front, Back and to the Hazards. Pro-Tips were provided along with Jack and Arnie's scores the first time they played the course.

King and Bear Clubhouse is filled with amazing photos of both gentleman’s life and career. Make sure to take some time to enjoy the memories. Thank you Jack and Arnold!

Designed by Sam Snead (the Slammer) and Gene Sarazen (the Squire). Forward friendly this course was - especially 18! The ladies playing out-numbered the men!

Located directly within the World Golf Village, you have several views of the Golf Hall of Fame. Another lovely course - short, sweet and not as challenging. You can also enjoy the apples and cold towels at this course as well. June was “Woman’s Golf Month” so Liz enjoyed a nice discount on the price - only $39.00 ($49.00 at King and Bear).

Orlando World Center - Hawk's Landing

One of the largest Marriott hotels, Orlando World Center houses Hawk's Landing - a wonderful Golf Course that is beautiful, charming and at times challenging. We were greeted by another of the friendliest Starters we have met over our 50-state Journey (with Helen from Anchorage Alaska being the other!). Bill, our Starter was a very happy fellow who most definitely shared in our enthusiasm for the game of golf! We had a great round, playing with the Golf Pro's 15-year old son Michael, who we'll probably see on the Pro Tour one day!

Tiburon Golf Club Naples Florida (The Ritz Carlton Golf Resort, Naples)

Tiburon Golf Club Naples Florida (The Ritz Carlton Golf Resort, Naples)

Located on the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Naples complex, Tiburon is the home of the Shark Shootout. Tiburon has two 18-hole courses, Gold and Black. Gold was closed for maintenance, so we played the Black. We were told the Gold is “easier” and the one that the Shark Shootout is held on - oh well! The tee-markers were excellent. This was the first course we played on that had stone markers (“shark-fin” shaped - of course) with the words Back, Middle, Forward to clearly identify which tee-box was which. The course also had a “blended” method to provide just the right amount of challenge for a mid-handicapper (like Jeff!) which was called Tiburon and identified by an extra Marker (a black wooden peg). The course was beautifully landscaped with an abundance of yellow daisy plants. The golf cart GPS had some great features like CBS Sports streaming the weekend Golf scores and a 3-D “flyover” image of the hole as you approached. Only 30 minutes from Marco Island, if you are headed down that way, it’s worth planning to play a round for sure!

Marco Island Marriott's The Rookery

Marco Island Marriott's The Rookery

The last round on our June 2011 Florida Golf Tour, we played The Rookery. Marco Island Marriott’s golf course is located in the Fiddler’s Creek complex which was about 7 miles from the hotel. We met up with a Marriott colleague, Kathleen Quinn, who transferred from Long Island, NY to Marco Island over 10 years ago and has been enjoying Florida life and improving her golf game. Thankfully, the course is forward friendly for those of us who are not “big hitters”! Lots and lots of water and tall grassy bushes; our best round of this “tour” if was not. Jeff lost a number of golf balls to the waters and grass, and Liz had her ups and downs - Kathleen’s game was fantastic! The course is a real beauty with several "island-ish" greens and nice stonework.

The Marco Island Marriott Hotel is a beautiful hotel located right on the ocean with an amazing pool and wonderful restaurants. It's a must visit location for those that like the sun, sand - and golf!

Alaska, the Final Frontier and our final US Golf State!

Many magnificant moments in Alaksa. Of course we did more than golf! Scroll down for some amazing pictures of both golf and some of our other adventures. But before that, here are our thoughts on golfing in Alaska!

Anchorage Golf Course

After a rainy start to the day, we moved our 9am tee-time to 5pm when the sun came out and stayed high in the sky until 10pm! One of the top rated courses in Alaska, we played the front 9 with a local resident named Bill who helped us navigate the course. The staff was extremely friendly, but not so much were the Thrips (teeny-tiny flying plant-eating bugs), and we quickly learned like the color white – which was what Liz was wearing! Later we read an article in the Anchorage Daily that this year there was an over-explosion of this creature – great!! Thankfully Liz had a black jacket and we managed through the round. The course was in beautiful condition, well manicured and views of the Chugach Mountains surrounded us on every hole. Thanks to everyone there for welcoming us to our first round in our 50th golf state!

Moose Run – (Creek) Golf Course

Round 2 we were welcomed by the friendliest starter we have ever met – Helen! She regaled us with stories of Bear and Moose sightings, of which we did not encounter – fortunately or unfortunately. Nonetheless, the course was creatively landscaped with flowers sprouting out of tree stumps, boulders and even hanging from tree limbs. A more challenging course than Anchorage it required more creative shot making. The most memorable hole would be the Par 5 9th – a definite 3-shot hole requiring perfect placement, which Jeff happened to do – making par! Liz on the other hand had several layups to cross 2 waste areas and a stream. This is a must play if you get up north!

Midnight Sun Black Diamond Golf Course (9-hole)

Traveling north from Anchorage to Denali State Park we did not plan to golf, but when we heard about the Northern most Golf Course in the world, we had to play! Thankfully we encountered more friendly residents who provided us transportation to and from the golf course (located in Healy) – thank you Annie! We took their “package” which included rental clubs, balls, tees, a souvenir towel and of course the greens fee. It was a crazy links-type course and at times was hard to figure out which green was for which Tee-box! Again we played until late in the evening with the sun shining high in the sky. It’s a very small course with no separation between holes 4 and 9 – so you might want to wear a helmet if you play – we had 2 close calls! And although we did not play it, they also had the most creative miniature golf-course using varied local equipment (dog-sled, boat, plow, and such). Make sure you play late at night and get your Mightnight Sun Golfing certificate! www.blackdiamondgolf.com

ONLY 1 STATE TO GO! LOOK OUT ALASKA, HERE WE COME - SUMMER 2010!

Just finished our tri-state golf adventure through Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas! Below are reviews of the courses we played. Scroll further down for pictures from each.

State #49 – Arkansas – Stonebridge Meadows

Stonebridge Meadows Golf Course is part of Arkansas’ Natural State Golf Trail. Thanks to Matt Dolye (and his adorable 3-year old daughter Amy – for the first 9) for joining us! Amy quickly picked up caddying skills and made sure no golf club was left behind. A very nice course nestled on the outskirts of a community; the beautiful homes are only in view on the last few holes. At first the course seemed unassuming, but after only a few holes became scenic and most enjoyable – especially because the open design allowed room to correct errant shots! The golf carts include great laminated yardage books with tips for each hole. Hole #17 is a tribute to Augusta National’s Hole #12.

State#48 – Oklahoma – Karsten Creek and Jimmie Austin

Karten Creek, named in honor of Karsten Solheim, founder of Ping golf is home to the championship Oklahoma State University golf team. This elegant course was in as fine a shape as we have ever seen. The greens were smooth as glass and lightening fast – it only took us four, five…ok six holes to figure out the speed! Another unforgiving course, as any shot off the fairway is gobbled up by the extremely tall grass, lost forever. A forward friendly course – made Liz very happy and once again shot within her average…Jeff did better (than in Kansas – see below). Overall, although the experience was wonderful, for non-members, the greens fee may make you reconsider playing.

Jimmie Austin, located on the campus of the University of Oklahoma, was a charming and well manicured course just about to host the US Amateur Public Links Championship (July 2009). Before our round we had a great chat about traveling the country with the Starter, Larry, who also does his own share of country touring. The course was well laid out with room for errant shots (unlike the other two course we just played – see below Karten Creek and Cottonwood Hills – it was a nice change of pace!) The fairways were lined with impressive trees, which we thankfully managed to avoid during our round! A unique feature of this course were the Tee markers – which are roman numerals I - IV rather than colored labels and honored the school colors of red and white. And a final mention, we just could not resist, are the arguably most comfortable golf carts we have had the pleasure to use (less our visit to Courd’Alene Idaho). Thanks also to Tyler for stopping by at the turn to say hello. Overall, a great value for the experience and we highly recommend a round!

State #47 Kansas – Cottonwood Hills

An adventure, this Nick Faldo design was recognized by Golf Digest as one of the best new courses in 2008. It was a challenging course, or better yet – dare we say - a crazy ride filled with twists, turns, hills and valleys that is very “unforgiving”. Target golf is a must, as there is very little room for error. Look out for hole #15! Jeff’s exact words at the end of that one were “what was Nick Faldo smoking when he designed this one”? However, it is a very forward friendly course, which allowed Liz to shoot within her average score –Jeff, not so much! A trip to the Golf Shop to re-stock on balls was needed – oh well! Overall, the staff was friendly, the course conditions were wonderful, and we’d recommend a visit if you are in the Hutchinson area of Kansas.
